LOOK BENEATH THE INTERFACE

A website is a system.
Modernise it thoughtfully.

Select a layer to see what deserves attention. A complete replacement is one option—not the starting assumption.

START WITH THE REAL PROBLEM

When the website starts holding the business back.

Age alone is not a reason to rebuild. Look for specific limits in performance, usability, maintenance and the work your team needs to do.

Website performance dashboard with a speed gauge and warning indicators
01

Slow or unstable journeys

A page or workflow that stalls needs investigation across the interface, server and data.

Measure before choosing a new stack.
02

A dated interface

The underlying system may work while the frontend makes simple tasks difficult.

Assess a redesign with the backend retained.
03

Updates are difficult

Routine changes can become expensive when the code or editing process is hard to maintain.

Review maintainability and content management.
04

Integrations do not fit

Disconnected tools can force the team to copy the same information repeatedly.

Map APIs, data and system dependencies.
05

Maintenance is overdue

Unsupported dependencies or unclear access controls deserve a structured technical review.

Agree update, permission and testing priorities.
06

Migration feels risky

Records, forms, logins and valuable URLs need a plan before the old system is replaced.

Define validation and rollback arrangements.

Not sure where to start? Describe the problem before choosing the solution.

A PRACTICAL STARTING POINT

Relevant business solutions

Website modernisation means improving an existing website or application to meet current requirements. It can involve targeted repairs, a frontend redesign, component replacement or a rebuild. Migration to another stack is one option, not the default recommendation.

PLANNING, INVESTMENT AND DELIVERY DETAILS

Start with the constraint, not the framework

Repeated maintenance problems, inaccessible mobile screens, unsupported dependencies or difficult integrations can justify a technical review. Age alone does not establish that a system is insecure or unsuitable. Record the business impact, current hosting and source-code ownership, then inspect the dependencies and deployment process. Tralionex confirms the available delivery scope after this assessment; a technology label is not a substitute for requirements.

PHP, React, MERN and PERN: different decisions

PHP is a server-side language and can remain appropriate in a maintained application. React is a frontend library; it does not automatically replace a PHP backend. MERN typically combines MongoDB, Express.js, React and Node.js. PERN uses PostgreSQL with Express.js, React and Node.js. Database relationships, integrations, team skills and maintenance responsibilities should guide the choice. Existing MERN capability does not establish that every PHP or PERN migration is feasible without review.

What must be protected during change?

Inventory existing functions, valuable content, customer and transaction data, URLs, forms, authentication, permissions and third-party integrations. Identify recurring jobs and staff workflows that may not be obvious from public pages. Agree backups, representative test data, acceptance checks and a rollback plan before changing production. Sensitive access and data transfers need an approved private process, never a public enquiry form.

SEO-aware migration planning

List current URLs and their replacement destinations before launch. Preserve useful content, page intent and metadata where appropriate; plan redirects for changed URLs, review canonicals and internal links, and update the sitemap. Check crawlability and monitor errors after deployment. Rankings and traffic can fluctuate even with careful planning, so an SEO-aware migration is not a ranking guarantee. Large content and platform changes should be evaluated together rather than treated as cosmetic edits.

From assessment to handover

Technical discovery establishes access, ownership and the system boundary. Assessment identifies dependencies and risks. Requirements and architecture planning compare options before a scope and migration strategy are agreed. Development and staged testing verify behaviour away from production. Deployment includes agreed cutover checks, followed by verification, handover and any contracted support. Data migration, downtime windows and rollback responsibilities must be explicit in the proposal.

Compare lifetime cost, not just the rebuild quote

A replacement may simplify some work while introducing new hosting, maintenance and training requirements. Estimate the effort to reproduce existing behaviour, test integrations, migrate data and support staff after launch. Standard website packages can inform a simple redesign discussion, but custom application work needs a separate assessment. Ask which assumptions could change the estimate and how new requirements will be handled.

MERN or PERN: start with the records and rules

Both combine React, Express and Node.js. MongoDB’s document model distinguishes MERN from PERN’s PostgreSQL relational model. Neither is universally faster, cheaper or more secure. Assess data relationships, transactions, existing systems, integrations, security, hosting, maintenance, budget and future changes together.

Move the working business, not just the page design

Migration changes the platform, hosting or structure while transferring the agreed content, data and functions.

A visually complete replacement can still break logins, forms, payments or valuable URLs if those dependencies are missed.

Options, deliverables and cost factors
Options to assess
Assess an interface refresh, incremental PHP or WordPress work, a retained backend with a new frontend, or a complete rebuild.
How the work happens and what you receive
Inventory URLs, records, permissions, authentication and integrations. Back up and rehearse in staging, validate migrated records and user journeys, agree deployment and rollback, then monitor the release.

Legacy code, data quality, downtime constraints and integrations drive the quote. Share a requirements brief first; do not send passwords or production credentials through a public form.

02

When a public website is no longer enough

A public website explains your offer. A portal gives authorised users access to tasks and records; a dashboard summarises information, while an admin panel manages it.

Teams and customers may need secure self-service instead of exchanging spreadsheets or requesting every update by email.

Map users and permissions, define data and approval rules, build the agreed interface and test access and validation. React, MERN or PERN may fit; dashboards do not inherently require any one stack.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

A few things you may be wondering.

Can an existing PHP backend be retained?

Potentially. A React frontend can communicate with an existing backend if the architecture and APIs support it.

Is MERN better than PERN?

Neither is universally better. The database model and application requirements are important considerations.

Can I retain my existing website URLs?

A migration plan can preserve suitable URLs and implement redirects where required, but search outcomes cannot be guaranteed.

Why is migration not offered at one fixed price?

Existing systems vary in code quality, features, databases, integrations and testing requirements.
